"New Beginnings" - Stories About Saved NYC Shelter AnimalsOk so first of all, HAPPY FREAKIN NEW YEARS EVE PEOPLE!
And as we reflect on this past year, please allow me to indulge??☺
2015 was a really special year.
SO many great things, not so great things, just all the colors of things occurred this year… You know like, getting all the way around the sun. The sun is like… Enormous. Good job everyone!
But here is my personal STAND OUT of 2015??
Like so many, I get incredibly worked up, and passionate about all these things in the world that need all of us to come together to command actual CHANGE.
One subject that had started pounding away at my heart, was Pitt-bull awareness, and the overall mistreatment of this incredibly misunderstood breed. This breed who so greatly suffers the consequences of our ignorance.
I can preach all I want on Facebook, but this year, I actually got off me bum and did something about it. I signed up to be a foster for the animal kill shelters in NY.
So as a girl, Living alone in midtown Manhattan, in a 5 story walk up that doesn’t allow Pit-bulls ? Well, it probably wasn’t the most thoroughly thought out rescue attempt, but I quite literally couldn’t help myself.
After some research I learned:
So many of These beautiful dogs are being euthanized every single day. There are THREE kill shelters right here in the NY area. Manhattan, Long Island, and Brooklyn. There are Facebook pages set up by these incredible rescue groups, who so bravely and selflessly volunteer at these shelters.
They get to know these dogs and take the time to create individual profiles for every single one of them. These profiles give a breakdown as to what they have learned about the dogs personalities.
You can visit these pages and look at pictures, watch videos, and read up on each dog at the shelter. It also gives you the date to which that dog will be put down if not rescued beforehand.
Shortly after visiting this page, I signed up to become foster. As a foster, you are quite literally pulling them out of the line of fire, eventually finding them their forever home. (with the help of the rescue group)
Each of dogs that I fostered were a complete leap of faith.
You never fully know what you are getting into until the dog shows up at your apartment, then it’s like, “ummm hey… So like ummmm… Don’t eat me, k”?
I can say now, first hand, that these dogs were the most loving, forgiving, tender, intelligent lives, THE MOST worthy of living theirs out to its entirety.
All three of them were incredible adventures in my life, and knowing they are all safe in their forever homes brings me so much joy every single day.
I’m incredibly passionate about making this very misunderstood breed, UNDERSTOOD, and I know I’m not alone.
BUT
If we keep projecting these sweet, loving creatures as killers, and monsters then more of these innocent lives will be lost.
Oh please PLEASE if you can be a part of the change, even with just your words. That alone can be so powerful.
